Causes of Gout

The medical condition that is referred to as gout is a form of arthritis, which may affect the joints in the big toe. This condition may typically be associated with severe pain and discomfort and is the result of excess uric acid in the blood levels. Crystals will form in the joints of the big toe and the pain may be debilitating until this ailment subsides. There are several causes for this condition to develop, including a family history of gout and ingesting foods that are high in purine levels. These foods may include eating excess shellfish, red meat, or drinking an overabundance of alcohol. Research has shown that stress, specific medications, or a prolonged illness may play a significant role in developing gout. If you feel you have this condition, it is advised to speak with a podiatrist who can properly treat this uncomfortable condition.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Kellvan Cheng, DPM from Elite Foot & Ankle. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Many people are aware of how having healthy feet can benefit the overall health of the body. As the aging process occurs, it may become difficult to perform daily foot inspections, which may prevent specific foot conditions from occurring. When the feet are properly looked after, improved muscle strength may be noticed, walking may become easier, and having stronger feet may prevent unnecessary falling from occurring. When practicing certain preventative measures, foot ailments that may include bunions and fungal infections of the feet or toenails may be avoided. Additionally, frequent soaking of the feet may aid in properly trimming the toenails and may provide relief if an ingrown toenail is present. If you would like additional information about the importance of properly caring for elderly feet, it is advised to seek the counsel of a podiatrist.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Kellvan Cheng, DPM from Elite Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Kellvan Cheng, DPM from Elite Foot & Ankle. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Pregnancy and Swollen Feet

There are many women who enjoy being pregnant and look forward to the joys of motherhood, despite the fact they may experience swollen feet during their pregnancy. This condition is referred to as edema, which is the term used for water retention. If large amounts of sodium and caffeine are ingested, they could potentially accelerate the natural process of this uncomfortable condition. Fortunately, there are measures that can be taken that may provide moderate relief. These may include drinking plenty of fresh water daily, elevating your feet several times during the day, and performing gentle exercises that may aid in improving blood circulation. Research has shown the importance of rest and relaxation, in addition to wearing shoes that fit properly and are comfortable. Please speak with a podiatrist for additional information about the effects that pregnancy may have on the feet.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Kellvan Cheng, DPM from Elite Foot & Ankle. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
