It’s important for the elderly to stay active so that they can remain strong, flexible, and balanced. To accomplish this, it is recommended that elderly persons follow some sort of exercise regime and maintain a healthy diet. Just be sure to ask a doctor what kind of exercise is right for you. While you are at the doctor, it’s a good idea to review your medication with them to see if they cause any side effects like dizziness or loss of balance. Having your vision and hearing checked is also recommended to prevent falls. If your home is messy and contains objects that you could trip over, it is advised to clear it out so that there is nothing that could cause a fall. Finally, talking to your family and telling them about the risk and severity of falling among the elderly is a good way to help raise awareness of the issue. Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance.
